Alternative Social Media - State of the Disunion

Since he last covered this topic at #SMCamp in 2015, the landscape has changed dramatically.

In 2018, we've seen the mainstream platforms censor and ban more users than ever before. This raises some big questions:
- What are the business factors driving censorship?
- What are the standards on who is censored or banned?
- Who should set these standards?
- Is a "chill" effect happening on mainstream platforms? Is this driving growth of alternative platforms?
- How reasonable is it to expect established platforms to fairly and consistently police content? What are the consequences if they don't?
- Politics has already created silos “on” platforms. Will the current political divide lead to a further divide of users to separate platforms along political lines?

Some other topics include:
- Yes, 4chan is still trolling you.
- The world of Reddit in 2019.
- State of the Memes: Will the EU’s article 13 matter?
- The state of divide in politics, and the story of Gab.
- "Paul’s 10 To Watch" alternative platforms.
- Where are Discord, Line, Kik and a thousand others like them going? Are niche messaging platforms the new mainstream?
- From Steem to Kin to Facebook ... is 2019 the year blockchain technology breaks out across social media?
- Diaspora has been around awhile ... Is decentralization still the future?
- Will Minds be the category killer for feature-rich, user-friendly decentralized, blockchain platforms?
- Can an alternative platform ever challenge YouTube in a serious way?
