Restoring social media’s promise. Starting with mind and body.
How do you work in digital and social media and not become consumed by it? So many streams, platforms, threads, and client demands. So much information streaming into our conscious (and subconscious) minds. An endless tape recording shaping our reality. Social media has consumed current generations - Gen X, Millenials of course, and Gen Z coming through - and, as a natural industrial (r)evolution, that’s par for the course. But what do we now know, more than a decade from the launch of the iPhone, about smart devices and social media’s effect on our psyche, and society?

Working with a top neuroscientist and cognitive behavioural therapists, two brothers, Dean and Bruce McCoubrey, based in Cape Town and Vancouver, analyze the challenges ahead of us and propose useful some checks and balances, offering a pathway to increased digital awareness, objectivity and resilience. Potentially a path to more work/life equilibrium, and, dare they say it, happiness. The secret, they propose, is in understanding the profound connection between mind and body and how this connection is easily manipulated by social and smart devices.

It all starts with awareness, how we use our time, our voice, and the most valuable and unique asset we possess in our lifetime, our individuality. The benefits of this presentation will deliver insights that will increase your efficiency and challenge your identity - an opportunity to “restore social’s promise”.

The Smart Woman's Guide to Surviving Online Harassment
The ubiquity of trolls, haters, and outright Nazis has made navigating online spaces increasingly arduous - especially for women, PoC, those in the LGBTQIA community, and anyone who lives in the spaces where those Venn diagrams intersect. Seattle writer and blogger Geraldine DeRuiter spent some time researching what makes online abusers tick (and even engaged a couple of them directly.
A lot of them just called her names and blocked her. But a couple didn't!)

Geraldine has a few tips for how we can survive online harassment and make the internet less of terrible place to work and play.

Round Table Discussions
1. Humaira Ahmed - What it is like to be a Female Founder and CEO of a tech startup.

In Canada, Women hold 60% of the degrees in STEM, yet only 21% work in ICT. Even with STEM degrees, women earn less than male counterparts. The tech industry has 25% of the women working with only 13% in executive positions and only 5% with the title of CEO.

In this session, Humaira will talk about what it has been like to be a woman in tech who also happens to be a woman of colour, an immigrant and the CEO of a tech company.

Key takeaways for participants include top characteristics/skills to ensure we thrive not survive as we carve out a path for ourselves and things to be mindful of and avoid before taking on a new venture or project, especially as ambitious as building your own social networking platform.

Bonus: Humaira will also share how she leveraged the existing social networks to build a trusted brand amongst all the noise.

2. Ricky-Lee Watts - Using Social Media with Intention and Purpose

Social Media is a means to relate, connect, and share our journeys; so that we may continue together and aspire to a life worth living. One that we dream of, create, and put into action.

Capable of enhancing the ways we live and bettering our work practices, this technology allows us to share messages with an audience, and receive feedback from that same community.

As it's built to connect, social media can greatly influence movement towards interdependency in our lives, but if not used consciously it can be something that disconnects us. So, what do we do to find balance, and utilize social media to engage people in this new story we're co-creating?

Throughout this discussion we'll explore:
  • Why do you use social media?
  • What is its value and in what ways does social media enrich our lives?
  • In what ways can we make our experiences with this medium more intentional and meaningful?

Storytelling for Entrepreneurs That Sell
Stories explain, captivate, disturb and inspire. Entrepreneurship is about telling a story that connects the deep needs of people with a solution. Stories stitch everything together - your vision, your customers’ expectations, your business model, even your name, logo and colour of the walls. It’s a powerful tool to keep you focused, to bring aboard believers, and to get the word out in a way that goes beyond price and item.

Alternative Social Media - State of the Disunion
Since he last covered this topic at #SMCamp in 2015, the landscape has changed dramatically.

In 2018, we've seen the mainstream platforms censor and ban more users than ever before. This raises some big questions:
- What are the business factors driving censorship?
- What are the standards on who is censored or banned?
- Who should set these standards?
- Is a "chill" effect happening on mainstream platforms? Is this driving growth of alternative platforms?
- How reasonable is it to expect established platforms to fairly and consistently police content? What are the consequences if they don't?
- Politics has already created silos “on” platforms. Will the current political divide lead to a further divide of users to separate platforms along political lines?

Some other topics include:
- Yes, 4chan is still trolling you.
- The world of Reddit in 2019.
- State of the Memes: Will the EU’s article 13 matter?
- The state of divide in politics, and the story of Gab.
- "Paul’s 10 To Watch" alternative platforms.
- Where are Discord, Line, Kik and a thousand others like them going? Are niche messaging platforms the new mainstream?
- From Steem to Kin to Facebook ... is 2019 the year blockchain technology breaks out across social media?
- Diaspora has been around awhile ... Is decentralization still the future?
- Will Minds be the category killer for feature-rich, user-friendly decentralized, blockchain platforms?
- Can an alternative platform ever challenge YouTube in a serious way?

WORKSHOP - Digital Legacy Plan
One hundred years from now, there will be 1 billion dead people on Facebook. That’s a sobering thought for each of us as we consider our own mortality. PANEL DISCUSSION - Are Impressions, Reach, Views and Clicks Valuable Metrics?
  • "We achieved 1 billion impressions with our latest campaign!"
  • "Our video went viral with over 10 million views!"
  • "We reached 5 million decision makers with our programmatic campaign."
Okay, but what were the results? The actual results?

CHANGING THE WAY WE THINK ABOUT RESULTS

We know that not everything is about the sale.  Brand awareness and brand building are still relevant reasons to get a message out into the world, so not every view, impression or click should or needs to be about a conversion, but it's high time to address the inflated numbers and fraud.

And that is exactly what this esteemed panel of veteran marketers is going to tackle.

In an era of fake news, trolls and haters, spambots, and egregious privacy breaches, how can non-profit organizations and government engage meaningfully online with stakeholders and clients? In this practical and tactical workshop, Lori Elder and Vicki McLeod explore strategic opportunities for not-for-profits and government to use social media tools creatively and effectively to deliver on social promises, get their messages out and get their good work done.

The session will include a special emphasis on social listening, visual media, affordable video like Zoom and Animoto, and how to use live streaming platforms such as Instagram Stories and Facebook Live. A substantial portion of the workshop will be devoted to participant engagement to address the key questions, unique needs and special interests of the not-for-profit and government sectors.

The Most Efficient Way To Do Social Media For Businesses Who Think Social Media Is Annoying
Sure a lot of us think social media is the coolest thing since sliced bread (especially at a social media conference) but the reality is not everyone feels that way.  Many business owners quietly long for the good old days when customers hadn't been trained by Amazon to check reviews and do price comparisons online before they bought anything.  Social media for most of the 30 million small business owners in the US and Canada feels like a chore, something they are being forced to learn about even while they aren't convinced of its value.

Jeff Lerner, owner of an Inc5000 agency that has served over ten thousand of these business owners in the last 6 years, has heard this refrain thousands of times and is here to talk about how to deal with it with a presentation that will help you:
  • Understand how to talk about social media with business owners who don't would rather not
  • Figure out the "bare minimum" social strategy for any business to not handicap themselves by neglecting social entirely
  • Learn the 3 social data points that impact business reputation the most and how to manage them most efficiently

Social Media, Tribalism, and Society’s Breaking-Point
Political movements, social class systems, and religious conflicts…throughout history, socio-political forces have swayed society’s pendulum from one extreme to the other. At each extreme, some dramatic – often bloody – break-point event occurs that coalesces communities into action, shifting its momentum in the other direction.
Today, technology is the driver propelling society’s pendulum to yet another extreme: Social Tribalism. Despite the promise of building communities, social media has, in fact, done the opposite. Phenomena such as “Social Isolation” and the “Fear of Missing Out” or FOMO, have become the study of modern psychiatrists and social anthropologists. Instead of building friendships, social media has contributed to further divided communities, cyber-shills, the rise of fake news, trolling, mental health issues, and suicides.
Sam Fiorella will outline his study of the effects of social media on our personal engagements – personally and professionally – and share his call to action in hopes that we can avoid another break-point event that threatens to unhinge the pendulum.

Ethics in Social Media
The deeper we get into social media, the more it seems we move away from what were the original tenets of trust, communication and transparency/authenticity. As the gap between people's "real lives" and their "instagram lives" gets wider and wider, what are the ramifications for us as a society? This session will include an exploration of the dark side of social media, including:
The need for meaningful communication.
Acknowledgement of the ugly aspects of influencer marketing and how to do it better.
Finding ways to facilitate appropriate attribution (copyright).
The death of originality.

Closing Keynote -The Future of Facebook: Where Marketers Need To Focus Today for Maximum Results Tomorrow
Facebook users have long associated the platform with News Feed. That's changing, and fast, says Mark Zuckerberg. Catering to short attention spans—coupled with users’ desire for more private and ephemeral sharing—messaging and Stories are growing the fastest. Facebook also continues to place massive emphasis on video, determined to become a major player in digital streaming television. How can marketers make sense of all this and focus on the right mix today to get the right results tomorrow? In Mari Smith’s dynamic keynote, she will cover:
1. 3 key areas Facebook is prioritizing today – what marketers need to know
2. Planning for a future with a diminished News Feed
3. How to cut through the noise, get noticed and make the right people take action.
